What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots, which are usually made of medical-grade titanium, and look like tiny screws. We surgically place them into the jawbone at pre-planned locations, where they fuse with the surrounding tissue. Once they form a strong bond with the bone, they can provide an incredibly strong base of support for crowns, bridges, and dentures. They are becoming increasingly popular due to their longevity, durability, and high success rate.
The 4 Step Dental Implant Process

Unlike traditional tooth replacement options such as dentures or dental bridges, getting dental implants requires a unique, four-step process that spans several months. Although this may seem like a long time, the long-term benefits of this treatment are well worth the investment. At Seaside Dental of Jacksonville Beach, we’re proud to complete the entire dental implant treatment process right here in our office, instead of having to refer you to an outside specialist.
While each patient’s treatment may look slightly different, there are four main steps you can expect yours to take: the consultation, surgery, osseointegration, and of course the delivery of your final restoration!
Initial Dental Implant Consultation

At your initial appointment, Dr. Habibi will examine the condition of your oral health and review your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. If needed we will work with you to complete any preliminary procedures such as gum disease therapy, tooth extractions, or bone grafting. Next, we can move on to planning the rest of your dental implant treatment. At this time, we will walk you through step-by-step what you can expect next, including the timeline for treatment and the total cost.
Dental Implant Surgery

At Seaside Dental of Jacksonville Beach, we are proud to offer your complete dental implant treatment in-house. This means you won’t need to pay multiple dentists or drive around from specialist to specialist to restore your smile.
Dental implant surgery always begins with Dr. Habibi numbing the area to be treated. Next, she will make an incision in the gums, place your implant post(s), close the gums, and place protective caps over your dental implant posts.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment Placement

The next step is osseointegration of your dental implant, where it fuses with your jawbone. This is extremely important, because to be successful, your prosthetic will need to remain securely in place.
Osseointegration can take between three and six months. Once complete, you’ll need another small surgery, where Dr. Habibi will place your abutments on top of the dental implant posts. These are what hold the teeth (crowns) in place. As you heal over the next few weeks, your final restoration(s) will be crafted from impressions taken of your mouth.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations

Lastly, you’ll need to return to see Dr. Habibi to have your restoration(s) placed. These may be in the form of a crown, bridge, or denture, depending on how many teeth you’re missing. At this time, she will check to make sure your bite is comfortable, and if everything looks and feels good, you’ll be free to go show off your gorgeous new smile!

Dental Implant FAQs
Does Getting Dental Implants Hurt?
Not at all. In fact, most patients are surprised at how similar the dental implant process is compared to other dental procedures they’ve had. Many tell us it feels like getting a crown or a big filling. The reason it’s so comfortable is that we take every precaution before placing your dental implants in Jacksonville Beach.
Dr. Fox will use a local anesthetic to thoroughly numb the treatment area before the procedure. You may feel pressure from the instruments, but not pain. After placement, it’s normal to experience mild soreness or swelling for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses.
What Can Cause Dental Implants to Fail?
Dental implant failure isn’t the norm, but there are certain factors and lifestyle habits that can increase the risk of complications. The most frequent cause of implant failure is a gum infection called peri-implantitis, which develops when plaque and bacteria collect around the implant. Good oral care is the best way to combat this condition.
In addition to poor oral care, smoking, vaping, uncontrolled diabetes, and jawbone deterioration can also contribute to failure. If you’re worried one of these issues may prevent you from getting the dental implants you desire, Dr. Fox can help. He’ll provide guidance to reduce the risks and put you on a path to dental implants in Jacksonville Beach.
Am I Too Old to Get Dental Implants?
When it comes to dental implants, age is a suggestion—not a rule. Many older adults successfully receive implants and enjoy restored chewing power, clearer speech, and improved confidence. What matters most is your overall health, jawbone density, and ability to heal properly.
Gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions may need additional care and planning, but in the majority of cases, they don’t disqualify you. Dr. Fox will look over your medical history and take detailed images of your smile to determine if implants are a safe option for you. Whether you're in your 50s, 70s, or beyond, these tooth replacements can still be an excellent solution.
Do I Need a Bone Graft Before Getting Dental Implants?
Not everyone needs a bone graft, but it’s common if your jawbone lacks the density or thickness needed to support an implant fixture.
Tooth loss, gum disease, and natural aging can all contribute to bone shrinkage over time. That’s why bone grafts are sometimes necessary to strengthen the area, so an implant can fuse properly via osseointegration.
During your consultation for dental implants in Jacksonville Beach, Dr. Fox will evaluate your X-rays and 3D scans to decide whether grafting is necessary. If you do need one, it’s a routine procedure and greatly improves implant stability, making it well worth the extra step.
