Thankfully, if this happens there’s usually no need to panic. Here are the steps you should take if yours becomes detached until you can be seen by your emergency dentist.

Step One: Call Your Dentist

If you lose your crown, the first thing you should do after ensuring that your tooth is safe, is call your emergency dentist. You will need to schedule an urgent appointment to either have it recemented or remade, depending on its age and condition, as well as the health of the underlying tooth. In some cases, you may be able to wait a few days to be seen, but providing the details of your situation to your dentist is the best way to determine this.

Step Two: Protect Your Crown

Save any pieces of your crown that you can salvage, even if it’s broken into multiples. If it cannot be repaired, you’ll need to have a new one created. If it is still in good condition, your dentist may be able to reattach it, but she will need to examine it and your tooth before making that decision.

Step Three: See if the Crown Still Fits

To see if your crown still fits, try putting it back on your tooth. First, make sure your mouth is completely clean. Brush and floss your teeth, and then clean the crown well, making sure there is no food or plaque inside the opening. Next, gently place it over the tooth but do not force it if it won’t go on.

Step Four: Reattach Your Crown

If your crown is still intact, it may be possible for you to temporarily reattach it using dental cement available at your local pharmacy. Please only attempt this if your dentist approves it and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging. Never use any type of household adhesive to reattach dental prosthetics, as these are not meant for consumption and could make you sick. Remember, OTC dental cement is only meant as a temporary solution and you will still need to see your dentist to have the crown permanently reattached or replaced.

Step Five: Take Care of Your Crown

Once your crown has been replaced or reattached, it’s very important that you take very good care of it going forward. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day, and floss daily. Be careful flossing around your crown, as it is possible to dislodge it if the floss gets caught underneath. Finally, don’t forget to visit your dentist every six months for your biannual exam and cleaning appointments. These will not only keep your teeth looking and feeling great, but it’s also a great opportunity for your dentist to ensure that your crown is attached securely.

Remember, accidents happen, and sometimes losing your crown can’t be prevented. If it does, don’t panic. Keep calm, follow the steps above, and soon your smile will look and feel great again!

About the Author

Dr. Fred Fox has always been a forward-thinker, which is a skill he finds particularly helpful during treatment planning.
